How Many Inserts Fit in a Planner?
This might be one of the quickest questions we answer...
"How many inserts can I fit?"
The short answer?
It depends on how you like your planner to feel.
Some people love a planner that's slim and lightweight. Others like one that's packed with everything they could possibly need.
The nice thing is, you get to decide.
Every planner starts with four elastics.
Your planner includes four elastics, which means you can add four inserts right away—one on each elastic.
For a lot of people, that's the sweet spot.
A monthly calendar, a weekly layout, a notes insert, and one or two specialty inserts are enough to keep everything organized without feeling bulky.
Want to add more?
You absolutely can.
Once you've filled your four elastics, you can use jump bands to pair two inserts together on a single elastic.
That lets you grow your planner without changing covers.
Most of our customers carry between four and eight inserts, and that's what we usually recommend.
It gives you plenty of room while still keeping your planner comfortable to write in and easy to carry.
Can you fit more than eight?
Technically... yes.
Over the years, we've seen planners with 10 or even 12 inserts tucked inside.
They certainly fit.
Whether they close comfortably is another story!
At that point, your planner is going to feel pretty full, and it may not be the best experience if you're opening and closing it throughout the day.
Some people love that look.
Others decide they'd rather swap inserts in and out as the seasons change.
Neither is wrong.
Our advice
If you're just getting started, don't worry about filling every possible inch of your planner.
Begin with the inserts you know you'll use every week.
As your routine changes, your planner can change too.
That's one of our favorite things about the Traveler's Notebook system. You aren't committing to the same setup forever. If you want to add an insert later, you can. If you stop using one, simply swap it out for something else.
We've been helping women build planners for more than 11 years, and one thing we've learned is that the "perfect" number of inserts looks a little different for everyone.
The best setup isn't the fullest planner.
It's the one that makes you excited to reach for it every day.
