How to Build a Planner You'll Actually Use

Can we tell you a little secret?

The best planner isn't the prettiest one.

It isn't the fullest one.

It isn't the one with the most stickers, the fanciest handwriting, or every habit tracked perfectly.

The best planner is simply the one you keep coming back to.

After helping women build planners for more than 11 years, we've noticed something.

Most people don't stop using their planner because they aren't organized enough.

They stop using it because they tried to make it do too much.

Build a planner for the life you have.

This might be the biggest piece of advice we can give.

Don't build a planner for the person you hope to become someday.

Build one for the person you are today.

If you're juggling work, kids, appointments, sports, and dinner every night, your planner doesn't need to look like someone else's on Instagram.

It needs to help you get through Tuesday.

Start smaller than you think you should.

It's so tempting to add everything.

Habit trackers.

Meal plans.

Reading logs.

Budget pages.

Morning routines.

Fitness goals.

Gratitude journals.

Before you know it, your planner has become another thing on your to-do list.

Instead, ask yourself:

"What would make my week easier?"

Start there.

You can always add more later.

Give yourself permission to change.

One of the biggest myths about planners is that once you've picked a setup, you're stuck with it.

You're not.

If something isn't working, change it.

If you've never looked at that habit tracker, take it out.

If you suddenly need more notes pages, add them.

Your planner is supposed to work for you—not the other way around.

Don't compare your planner to someone else's.

We've all done it.

You see beautiful planner spreads online with perfect handwriting, color-coordinated stickers, and pages that look like they belong in a magazine.

They're inspiring.

But remember...

You aren't seeing the grocery list that someone scribbled on the back of an envelope.

Or the week they skipped.

Or the pages they never posted.

A planner doesn't earn extra points for looking perfect.

It earns its place by being useful.

Let your planner have seasons.

Some months you'll write in it every day and then you will barely open it for weeks.

That's normal.

Your life isn't the same every month, so your planner doesn't have to be either.

Make it feel like yours.

This is the fun part.

Choose the inserts you'll actually use.

Add a bookmark that makes you smile.

Pick a cover you love carrying.

Use stickers if they make planning more enjoyable.

Skip them if they don't.

There isn't a right way to build a planner.

There is only the way that makes you excited to open it again tomorrow.

And if we could leave you with one thought after all these years, it would be this:

Your planner doesn't have to be perfect.

It just has to make your life a little easier.

If it does that, you've built exactly the right planner.
