Monthly vs. Weekly vs. Daily: Which Planner Inserts Are Right for You?
One of the most common questions we hear is...
"Do I need monthly, weekly, or daily inserts?"
Our answer?
Maybe all three.
Maybe only one.
It really depends on what you want your planner to help you do.
Let's walk through it together.
Monthly Inserts
If you like seeing everything at a glance, a monthly calendar is a great place to start.
It's perfect for:
- Appointments
- Birthdays
- Vacations
- School events
- Bill due dates
- Important deadlines
Think of it as your bird's-eye view of the month.
Almost everyone benefits from having a monthly calendar, even if they don't write in their planner every day.
Weekly Inserts
Weekly inserts are where most people spend their time planning.
This is where you'll jot down your to-do list, plan your week, keep track of errands, or organize everything that's happening over the next few days.
If someone asked us what to start with, we'd almost always recommend pairing a monthly calendar with a weekly layout.
It's the combination most of us use ourselves, and it's the one we recommend most often to new customers.
Daily Inserts
Daily inserts give you a full page—or close to it—for each day.
They're wonderful if your days are packed with appointments, meetings, projects, or long to-do lists.
Some people use daily pages every single day.
Others only pull them out during especially busy seasons, vacations, or holidays.
That's one of the things we love about a Traveler's Notebook planner. You can use daily inserts when you need them and swap them out when life settles down again.
So...which should you choose?
If you're just getting started, we'd recommend:
✔ A monthly calendar
✔ A weekly layout
Those two inserts work beautifully together and cover what most people need.
Then ask yourself one simple question:
"What do I wish my planner could help me with?"
If you find yourself wishing for more room each day, try daily inserts.
If your weekly layout is all you need, stick with it.
There isn't a wrong answer.
The best part?
You don't have to decide once and be done forever.
One month you might use weekly inserts.
The next month you may need daily pages because work is busy, school starts back up, or you're planning a big trip.
Your planner should fit your life—not ask you to fit into someone else's planning style.
After helping others build planners for more than 11 years, we've learned that the "perfect" setup changes.
And that's exactly how it's supposed to be.
