Why We Created the Journal Café

The Journal Café started before I ever went to France.

I was planning my trip and doing what we all do before traveling — searching for things to see, places to visit, and little experiences that felt special. Somewhere in that searching, I came across the idea of a journal café.

I loved the thought immediately.

A quiet table. A warm drink. A little paper. A reason to slow down and write.

Before I ever packed my suitcase, that idea had already turned into something for Tula XII Paper Co. I wanted to create a little at-home version of that feeling — something you could open, enjoy, and turn into your own cozy paper moment.

That became the Journal Café.

Then I actually went to France.

And funny enough, what I found wasn't quite a journal café the way I had imagined it. It was more of a letter-writing café, which I also loved. There was still that same feeling of slowing down, sitting with paper, and making time for something thoughtful. It just confirmed for me that the magic wasn't really in the exact name.

The magic was in the moment.

That's what the Journal Café is meant to be.

It's a reason to make a cup of tea, open your journal, write a little, maybe send a card to someone you've been thinking about, and enjoy a few quiet minutes with paper.

And yes, please use the coaster. That's part of the fun.

Each Journal Café has its own theme and personality, but the heart of it stays the same. It's not about doing it perfectly or filling pages and pages. It's about giving yourself a small pause in the middle of real life.

Our Journal Café is released seasonally, and every one is inspired by both the season and a location. It might be a place I’ve visited, a place I’m dreaming about, or simply a destination that gives us the feeling we want that box to hold. The location helps shape the colors, papers, prompts, and little details inside, so each Journal Café feels like its own tiny paper getaway.

You can journal a few lines.

You can write a card.

You can sip your tea and think for a minute.

You can make it as simple or as creative as you want.

That is exactly what I wanted this experience to feel like — a little thoughtful, a little cozy, and very easy to enjoy from home.

And now we're excited to bring it beyond the box too.

We'll be hosting in-person Journal Café gatherings at our studio in Troy, Ohio, where we can sit together, journal a little, write a card, drink a cup of tea, and enjoy the kind of paper moment that started this whole idea in the first place.
